New Year Process

Happy New Year 2011 – Here is how to get what you want this year !!

A friend shared the following “New Year on Purpose” process with me back in 2008. It is amazing how getting clear on what we want REALLY helps us bring that into our lives.

New Year on Purpose

Scientists have discovered that in our brains we have over 100 billion neurons

firing in infinite patterns. The “New Year on Purpose” process will help you

harness the power of your amazing brain so your neurons can fire in patterns

that will help you to focus on and achieve what you want.

There are three steps to this process:

1. Reviewing your year

2. Focusing on important categories in your life

3. Writing down what you want in 2011

Great achievers in many walks of life attest to the power of putting goals into

writing. Reading these words here and now on your screen is one thing; it is

actually doing the process that creates results.

You can do these steps on your own or with others in however much time you

have. Many with whom I’ve shared this information get together with friends and

family and do this process as part of their new year ritual.

1. Reviewing your year

As you think back over the past 12 months, consider:

a. What did you gain in 2010?

b. What did you lose in 2010?

c. What was challenging for you during 2010?

d. What did you learn in 2010?

e. What surprised you in 2010?

Please pause after each question to reflect on each one.

“Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.”

– Soren Kierkegaard, Danish Philosopher

2. Focusing on important categories in your life

Below are categories, listed in random order. Select the ones that interest you

and write them in whichever order you choose as category headings at the top of

each page.

  • Your Physical Health
  • Your Family
  • Your Spiritual Life
  • Your Finances
  • Learning
  • Your Friendships
  • Your Fitness
  • Your Contribution to the World
  • Your Work

Add any other categories that are important to you. Some people like to use their

top 5 -7, and others like a longer list. Here are some more categories to choose

from. If there are others that are important to you, please add them.

  • Emotions
  • Activities
  • Home Environment
  • Creativity
  • Social Life

When I do this with groups, we often use flip chart paper and colored markers

so we have room for drawing illustrations, diagrams, and little graphics that add

meaning for us. Some like to use a sketch book and pastels or colored pencils.

Others prefer to do this with their computer. Choose a way that works for you.

3. Writing down what you want in 2011

Under each category write what you want to create in your new year. Be specific.

Write or sketch what you will see, hear, feel, smell, and taste as a result of

reaching your goals. You will activate more areas of your brain as you involve

more of your senses.

Use the power of your mind to create vivid, life-like, and compelling images,

sounds, and feelings of what you want.

Add a sound track that is supportive, pleasing, and motivating to you.

When my friends and I get together to do this process, we find that talking it over

with each other is a big plus. As the year goes on and we are making decisions

that will affect our success, we find having spoken our goals aloud to each other

helps us stay on track. We encourage each other to really go for it.

I am encouraging you to go for it, too.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you

didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from

the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

— Mark Twain

That’s it. Think it through, write it down, and put it away. Your billions of neurons

will take it from there. A year from now, take it out, read what you wrote, and see

what’s happened.

That’s is the New Year on Purpose!
